Selena Gomez has been pretty much a constant on the covers of Vogue, ever since Vogue Brazil welcomed the American hitmaker onto her very first back in June 2016. Covers for Vogue Australia (on two seperate occasions), Vogue Singapore and American Vogue (again, twice) have since followed. Karla Martínez de Salas is quick to welcome Gomez back onto the cover of Vogue Mexico with the unveiling of the magazine’s January 2024 installment, as she’s captured all smiles for photographer Michael Bailey-Gates. Posing beside two giant floral displays in the charming cover photograph, the now 8-time Vogue cover girl is dressed by stylist Clare Byrne in a look from Prada’s Spring 2024 collection.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“This is so wrong… Selena looks like she wants to pee! She is going strong to be the singer with the worst covers in history. I still have NIGHTMARES about the tragedy that is her cover for V Magazine!” DK92 exclaimed.

“Why this? Starting off 2024 bad Vogue Mexico. They need a new team, obviously…” called out Xone.

“Aaaayyyyyy noo,” shrieked oaklee91, suggesting they’d seen better covers.

The Ghost of the Castle asked, “Is Selena Gomez even an ambassador to any fashion brand right now?”

“Seriously, will anything ever compare to when Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott photographed Selena for American Vogue‘s April 2017 issue? To this day, it remains the gold standard of Selena’s magazine covers and apparently no other creative individual wishes to outdo it,” noted vogue28.

Make no mistake that Karla Martinez de Salas has ramped it up throughout 2023, sat perched at the top job of both Vogue Mexico and Vogue Latin America. Covers over the past twelve month have included a bevy of A-list talent including everyone from Irina Shayk to Jennifer Lopez and Cardi B to Anna Ewers. To round out 2023, model Paloma Elsesser is welcomed onto both the covers of Vogue Mexico and Vogue Latin America for December, which are an ode to family. The team (including photographer Camila Falquez and stylist Devin Hershey) traveled to the small town of La Jordana in Mexico for the occasion, visiting the family home of hairstylist Evanie Frausto. Across the duo of covers, Paloma is dressed by Falquez in looks from Fendi Haute Couture (below) and Marc Jacobs (after the jump).

Vogue Mexico and Vogue Latin America’s latest took members of theFashionSpot forums by surprise. “Not a fan of hers but this really worked!” confessed Ihhbl.

“I actually like it,” MON echoed in complete agreement.

Crmsn felt the same way, commenting: “She usually doesn’t translate well in editorials, but these are good covers.”

“Love the first cover in the sheer black dress. I think Paloma looks Divine,” raved MModa.

“The best Paloma Elsesser has ever looked. The first one is a good cover – now she looks like a model,” applauded ivano.

However, not all of our forum members were in the same frame of mind. “Must be the only one who thinks the hairstyle on Paloma looks dreadful, and I am sick to absolute death of these fashion shoots with sheets used as backdrops,” complained vogue28.

Oaklee91 wasn’t sold either, expressing: “Kinda bland for me!”

Vogue Mexico & Latin America September 2023 : Cardi B by Alique

Don’t be sleeping on Vogue Mexico. Over recent months, the magazine which remains under the direction of editor Karla Martínez de Salas has managed to eclipse Vogue editions across the globe with terrific and buzz-worthy covers starring the likes of Irina Shayk, Anna Ewers, Jennifer Lopez and Alessandra Ambrosio. Due to the fact it’s a September issue, Mexican Vogue has seemingly pulled out all the stops and gave us none other than Cardi B as their cover girl for the title’s biggest offering of the year. The now three-time Vogue cover girl poses for photographer Alique across two unique and ultra-glamorous covers, decked out in a showstopping Schiaparelli haute couture creation in cover one (below) and a chic all-black Saint Laurent outfit for cover two (after the jump).

Mexican Vogue‘s latest had members of our forums a divided bunch. “Look at Cardi B out-modeling the supermodels! There is more charisma and glamour here than the American and British covers this month. I think Cardi looks absolutely fabulous, her hair looks flawless and she’s really serving us the glam,” raved aracic.
“Love it,” simply declared Gaultier_Bandit.
“No fan of Cardi B’s music here but these are, without question, some of the strongest September covers we’ve seen! Absolutely love how Cardi has photographed via Alique’s lens, love the photography overall, the styling and the beauty styling serves Cardi justice. It’s all just so perfectly executed, that I cannot help but to instantly love this,” vogue28 admitted.
Not everyone, however, shared the same enthusiasm. “What is this mess,” voiced NYLA22.
“Her body shape is horrendous in the Saint Laurent. It ruins what could have been her best cover,” noted an unforgiving GivenchyAddict.
“Mixed feelings… on one hand, I like Cardi B and I think this is the exact kind of makeover I want to see on Vogue. However, what terrible retouching or whatever mess this is,” Lola701 critiqued.

Make no mistake, Imaan Hammam can deliver a strong magazine cover. The impressive portfolio of the Dutch model of Moroccan and Egyptian heritage contains glorious covers of Allure, Porter, Vogue Netherlands, Vogue Arabia, Vogue Japan, Vogue Paris and WSJ. Magazine. This month the in-demand model looks sublime on the July 2022 covers of Vogue Mexico (below) and Vogue Latin America (after the jump). The current face of Fendace wears Chanel on both covers each captured by Alique.

Mexico doesn’t take our fancy frequently. Only covers with Shakira and Alessandra Ambrosio caught our attention recently. Now for June 2022 Karla Martinez de Salas welcomes Millie Bobby Brown to the Mexican fashion bible’s front cover marking the first Vogue cover for the actress best known for her role on Netflix’s Stranger Things. As a Louis Vuitton brand ambassador, Millie naturally wears a polka dot blouse from the brand’s Spring 2022 collection courtesy of stylist Maya Zepinic for the charming Claudia Knoepfel-shot image.

The end result divided our forums. “She’s 18 years old, right? Looks like she’s 30 and giving Keira Knightley vibes for some reason. Could and should be better,” critiqued WAVES.

“She looks like Natalie Portman in Black Swan. She doesn’t look like an 18-year-old girl,” echoed caioherrero.

“Millie Bobby Brown is going to have some interesting things to say about life when she’s 40 (when she’ll probably look 18),” joked tigerrouge.

“Sometimes I see photos of Millie Bobby Brown and literally have no idea who it is,” SophiaVB chimed in.

“Another forgettable cover for Vogue Mexico. Something is not working here. Claudia is a good photographer, but there is bad editing…” declared a disapproving Xone.

“Someone I would never expect to see on the cover of this edition of Vogue. Globalization at its finest,” stated marsnoop2.

Although not everyone agreed. “I’m able to appreciate there are zero gimmicks with the cover shot, it’s just a straightforward portrait image from Claudia Knoepfel, which shows Millie Bobby Brown in a very flattering light with lovely beauty and fashion styling,” noted vogue28.

It’s definitely a rare occasion to see fashion models on the covers of our favorite glossies. Usually, it’s models of the moment or supermodels from the 90s. So it’s refreshing to see Alessandra Ambrosio fronting Vogue Mexico. After absolutely impressing with last month’s Shakira cover, the Mexican fashion bible’s offering for August 2021 is also stellar. Shot in black and white by Emma Summerton and styled by Valentina Collado, Alessandra wears a Celine jacket and pants along with a Deborah Marquit top for the newsstand cover (below).

The cover certainly took our forum members by surprise. “Dreadful art direction aside, this is indeed a strong cover from Vogue Mexico… Alessandra looks fantastic, has photographed beautifully, has a strong and commanding presence — zero complaints,” commented vogue28.

“Unexpectedly good! Alessandra looks spectacular…” proclaimed an undoubtedly thrilled aracic.

“Ale slays!” raved an obviously stoked oaklee91.

“Wow, her best high fashion cover in YEARS… She looks like a SUPERSTAR!” declared Bertrando3.

“It’s like the Steven Meisel Vogue Italia cover I always wanted for her,” approved an absolutely impressed marsnoop2.

Clearly not everyone was jumping for joy, however. “Wow, that graphic design is unfortunate to say the least. Those fonts and overrated and outdated Alessandra in addition to all of this…I am having secondhand embarrassment from this,” said dontbeadrag.

It’s not often one of our wishes is granted. But thanks to Vogue Mexico, our dream just became reality. “Very Mariah Carey-ish…” described Bertrando3.

Phuel is undoubtedly a fan: “She instantly reminds me of Mariah circa 1990 and the shot and cover resemble 1990 American Vogue. Vogue Mexico knows their stuff.”

Vogue Mexico & Latin America May 2021 : Quannah Chasinghorse by Inez & Vinoodh

Mexico doesn’t take our fancy every single month. But when it does, we’re all in. The magazine had our undivided attention with a simply stunning Ana de Armas offering for October 2020 and broke new ground back in 2018 with Yalitza Aparicio. Now the Mexican fashion bible presents indigenous beauty Quannah Chasinghorse for May 2021. Captured by photographic duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin and styled by George Cortina, the model and activist works a dress from Valentino’s Spring 2021 collection looking ethereal down on a beach in Mexico.

But the cover ultimately fell flat for our forum members. “Hmm, I don’t like it. Something is missing,” said mikel.

“Not even Inez and Vinoodh can save Vogue Mexico,” declared MON.

“So bad…I blame the model and the photo editor. Quannah’s mouth expression and jaw look off. It looks generic…it’s just a girl in a dress at the beach,” expressed an underwhelmed Xone.

Urban Stylin shared the same sentiment: “Unfortunately, the posing makes the cover a little generic.”

“She’s the very first indigenous model to appear on the cover of Vogue Latin America. Remember that Yalitza and Limber Martínez were only on the cover of the Mexican edition. It’s a big moment despite if the picture is good or not. I like it…” approved ivano.

“Must admit that I had no idea who Quannah Chasinghorse was until now, but I find this cover rather beautiful… The colors are gorgeous, the use of the Valentino dress is superb and definitely one of Vogue Mexico’s better covers!” vogue28 chimed in.

It’s hard to believe that the last time Vogue Mexico grabbed our attention was way back in January 2019. But the Mexican fashion bible is definitely back on our radar with the unveiling of its October 2020 covers. It obviously helps that the magazine picked Ana de Armas for the two striking and sultry covers. With a flawless Vogue Spain cover already under her belt, the actress was captured down on the beach by Alique with George Cortina on styling duties. For cover one (below) Ana serves face wearing a pair of black latex gloves, while the second cover (after the jump) showcases her natural beauty.

In complete agreement was vogue28: “Utterly fabulous, but I am not at all surprised considering the involvement of George Cortina. “A very pleasant surprise, can’t say I expected to like this! Ana is beautiful as always and Alique delivered. Both covers are pretty great! First one looks like it was inspired by Christy Turlington‘s iconic portrait by Herb Ritts,” admired aracic.

The Best & Worst Magazine Covers of 2019

It’s been a crazy year for magazines. Glamour ditched print in favor of digital. Porter cut back on issues (but the mag’s set to make a biannual comeback in Spring 2020) and the U.K. edition of Marie Claire shut down completely. There were also lots of staff changes, like Justine Picardie leaving British Harper’s Bazaar and Anne Fulenwider departing American Marie Claire.

But 2019 wasn’t all doom and gloom. Back in March, we witnessed the relaunch of Vogue Greece and Vogue Hong Kong made its highly-anticipated debut. Sara Moonves made some welcome changes over at W, Radhika Jones finally started creating newsworthy covers of Vanity Fair and Edward Enninful continued to impress at the helm of British Vogue.

Of course, it’s the magazine’s front cover that can either make or break an issue. From Allure to Vogue Paris to American ELLE, we’ve reviewed everything the biggest titles had to offer this year.

Scroll through the slideshow above to see which magazine covers stood out from the rest, for all the right and wrong reasons.
