And so the 2024 awards season has officially begun…

Last night, Hollywood stars descended upon the iconic Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills for the 81st annual Golden Globe awards. Stars like Margot Robbie dazzled in sequined Giorgio Armani Privé (channeling Barbie, because what else?), Taylor Swift shone bright in custom lime green Gucci while the living legend that is Meryl Streep walked the red carpet in a shimmering Dolce & Gabbana floor-length skirt and jacket. Selena Gomez had somewhat of a mini Marilyn Monroe moment before the lens of the paparazzi, wearing a ruby red dress and the even the warm Los Angeles wind understood the assignment when Hunter Schafer arrived in custom translucent Prada. Elsewhere, Jennifer Lopez nailed old-school Hollywood glamour while Elle Fanning took deep in the Balmain archives to unearth and revive a vintage Pierre Balmain dress.

For the 2021 Emmy Awards, stars definitely wanted to stand out. From notice-me shades like highlighter hues to blinding sparkles, there was certainly a lot to take in. Not that we’re complaining.

There were also plenty of striking accents. We’re talking opera gloves with finger openings to flaunt some serious stiletto nails courtesy of Emma Corrin and Miu Miu. Not to mention a matching bonnet. Kerry Washington rocked a corset-enhanced Etro dress. Plus, go big or go home sleeves a la Sarah Paulson and Billy Porter.

The jewelry game was strong, too. Yara Shahidi’s Cartier necklace almost upstaged her gorgeous green Christian Dior haute couture dress. Then there were the stunning earrings. Take for example Michaela Coel’s perfect pearl danglers.

The 2021 Golden Globe Awards managed to pull off a bicoastal, part-virtual ceremony. And the stars managed to bring glamour back in a big way. Whether they were walking the red carpet or dressing up from home or the occasional hotel room.

Cynthia Erivo lit up the red carpet in a neon Valentino haute couture creation. Margot Robbie’s ruffled cold-shoulder Chanel dress really made an impression. Gal Gadot’s high-low ivory dress was also a high note. Meanwhile, Salma Hayek turned heads in a striking Alexander McQueen gown.

Off the red carpet, both Regina King and Nicole Kidman stunned in Louis Vuitton. Elle Fanning looked like a Greek goddess in Gucci. Anya Taylor-Joy took the plunge in Christian Dior haute couture. Lily Collins’ one-shoulder Saint Laurent number was another standout. And Andra Day accepted her award in style thanks to Chanel.

Celebs like Lady Gaga, Emma Stone, Charlize Theron and Jennifer Lopez all slayed in their OTT looks, but it was Pose star Billy Porter who made the biggest impression in a fierce Christian Siriano tuxedo ballgown.

has had its fair share of hits and misses this year. Rihanna gave the beauty-focused magazine a winner of a cover last month, as did Bella Hadid on the all-important September issue. But there have also been a series of disappointing covers featuring the likes of Lily James, Janelle Monae and Sasha Lane. Now, as the magazine unveils its November 2018 issue, it’s landed back in the red with a shockingly bad Angela Bassett cover. Photographed by Sharif Hamza and styled by Jaime Kay Waxman, the 60-year-old actress suits up in a gray plaid double-breasted jacket and trousers from Joseph — and we genuinely don’t know how Allure managed to get it oh so wrong.

Our forum members were left speechless — almost. “Ugh, this had potential,” sighed RMDV the second the cover came to light.

“Wow, how, HOW do you ruin Angela mot****** Bassett!!!! Shame on them, she can photograph million times better than this, and she deserved a better cover, but at least they gave her one. Still, sigh!” complained Miss Dalloway.

“Ugh, it had so much potential but ultimately failed due to bad decisions. Who even thought that was a good cover shot?” asked dodencebt.

“How do you manage to make Angela Bassett look bad?! It’s such a lackluster shot and the stylist should be sacked – that suit looks terribly unflattering,” 333101 chimed in.

Benn98 wasn’t best pleased either. “Crikey, what’s happening with her mouth? Hamza should be sacked for this, or whoever did the retouching. They’ve done her wrong here. She looks better in person. Can’t believe these shots passed so many people and nobody noticed this,” he ranted.

“Yeah her expression is a bit off… shame cause she’s such a stunning woman,” voiced Marc10.

“I feel like I should be celebrating it, but that cover shot does nothing to celebrate all that she is – a great-looking woman and a force of nature on the screen,” wrote tigerrouge.

She’s managed to secure an endless list of A-list cover girls ranging from Kim Kardashian to Selena Gomez. This month, Garcia’s first ‘Women in Hollywood‘ issue is here, as she continues ELLE’s long-standing tradition for 2018. For the November issue, Lady Gaga, Yara Shahidi, Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, Shonda Rhimes, Charlize Theron, Keira Knightley and Mia Farrow feature on a total of eight collectable covers.

Our forum members were quick to weigh in on which celebs received the best cover treatment. “Charlize Theron’s cover is so elegant it gave me shivers. It’s the perfect shot, breast included,” said dodencebt upon checking out the series of covers.

“Charlize’s cover is the strongest amongst all of them!” PierreGotha chimed in.

“Every single cover is very decent, but I think they nailed Charlize Theron’s and Lady Gaga’s. I was always fond of Zoey Grossman’s work and I think her work with Charlize is possibly one of her best,” added forum member SLFC.

“Hate admitting to this, but Lady Gaga’s cover is the best of the lot for me!” Benn98 confessed.

Also quick to show Gaga’s cover some love was forum member apple, writing, “Lovely covers with some nice choices but my favorite is Gaga. She looks fabulous, unlike on her Vogue cover where it looked like she was feeling sick.”

“Okay, ELLE can be hit or miss for me but EVERY single one of these covers is fantastic! Yara Shahidi, Gaga, Charlize… maybe those three are my faves, but honestly like them all,” Joromana applauded.

Miss Dalloway thought the magazine knocked the set of covers out of the park too, adding: “I don’t resent a single cover here, well done!”

When it came to the fashion at this year’s Emmy Awards, it was all about diversity. We’re talking everything from bright jewel tones to heavily embellished stunners to more streamlined black and white fare. Of course, there are always a few key elements that have the habit of recurring. Capes and capelets were trending, while tiers of ruffles, strategic cut-outs and unconventional trains all added extra oomph to several looks. Although skin was also in, it was restricted to relatively refined glimpses via plunging necklines, somewhat see-through skirts and the aforementioned cut-outs.
