And so the 2024 awards season has officially begun…

Last night, Hollywood stars descended upon the iconic Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills for the 81st annual Golden Globe awards. Stars like Margot Robbie dazzled in sequined Giorgio Armani Privé (channeling Barbie, because what else?), Taylor Swift shone bright in custom lime green Gucci while the living legend that is Meryl Streep walked the red carpet in a shimmering Dolce & Gabbana floor-length skirt and jacket. Selena Gomez had somewhat of a mini Marilyn Monroe moment before the lens of the paparazzi, wearing a ruby red dress and the even the warm Los Angeles wind understood the assignment when Hunter Schafer arrived in custom translucent Prada. Elsewhere, Jennifer Lopez nailed old-school Hollywood glamour while Elle Fanning took deep in the Balmain archives to unearth and revive a vintage Pierre Balmain dress.

Needless to say, the 2024 Golden Globe Awards proved to be an absolute fashion extravaganza and we here at theFashionSpot have curated the must-see looks of the night. Scroll further our selection:

As editor of W Magazine, Sara Moonves has made the magazine’s ‘Best Performances’ issues into a bit of a thing. Since 2021 when the annual edition first made its official appearance, issues have been photographed by an array of celebrated photographers including Juergen Teller, Tim Walker and Jamie Hawkesworth. Moonves welcomes back Teller with open arms for W‘s 2024 portfolio, bestowing upon us an assortment of 13 covers featuring a whole bevy of A-list talent. In each of the covers Margot Robbie, Nicolas Cage, Greta Lee, Zac Efron, Natalie Portman, Colman Domingo, Jodie Foster, Ryan Gosling, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Julianne Moore, Lily Gladstone, Charles Melton and Robert Downey Jr. pose before Teller’s lens around various different Hollywood locations.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Honestly, not sure what to think of these…” shared Ivancica the moment the covers dropped.

“These are all depressing to look at. Juergen even managed to make Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling look lifeless,” chimed in gunsnroses.

Also left severely disappointed was forum member lookatme, commenting: “Tragic. This kind of photography and concept is so embarrassing. OMG SO QUIRKED UP! THEY’RE IN A TRASHY SOUVENIR SHOP! HE’S HOLDING A LOBSTER! OMG!”

Xone felt the same way: “Teller needs a better direction, there is nothing interesting here – too pretentious!”

“These best performances issues by Juergen Teller (and everyone else) are the absolute worst when it comes to Sara Moonves’ W Magazine! Not one, not ONE redeeming cover and this is one of those occasions in which I cannot abide Teller’s photography or aesthetic. Major… UGH!” ranted vogue28.

Golden Globes gowns

We’re patiently awaiting the impending glitz and glamour of Sunday’s Golden Globes broadcast. Although it’s definitely going to look different than previous years thanks to the pandemic. We decided there’s no better time to look back at the best looks to ever grace the show’s red carpet. From Marilyn Monroe’s sparkly gown in the early 60s to Lupita Nyong’o and Cate Blanchett’s impressive showings. There’s certainly lots to love. Especially since the Golden Globes honors both film and television. Which means the red carpet is always jam-packed with fashion goodness.

The biggest night of award season definitely didn’t disappoint on the fashion front. The Oscars red carpet was full of extravagant gowns featuring everything from deconstructed bodices to capes to ruffles and fringe. We love when attendees take fashion risks, even if they don’t pay off. Hey, it’s the Oscars, go big or go home. There was a lot of black on the red carpet and plenty of bling. And while nominees like Scarlett Johansson, Cynthia Erivo and Renée Zellweger let their dresses do the sparkling, others opted to shine via statement jewelry, especially necklaces. Necklines ran the gamut from strapless to off the shoulder to plunging. Special shout-out to Janelle Monáe for winning the red carpet with her hooded Ralph Lauren Collection stunner. There were some bright spots at this year’s Oscars, including Mindy Kaling’s golden yellow Dolce & Gabbana number, Florence Pugh’s blue-green Louis Vuitton creation and Kristen Wiig’s larger-than-life Valentino. See what your favorite stars wore to this year’s Oscars in the slideshow above.

Nina Garcia continues to demonstrate her pull within the industry by scoring just about every big celebrity to front ELLE. This year alone, Garcia has dropped covers featuring heavyweights Gigi Hadid, Taylor Swift, Indya Moore and Angelina Jolie. Keeping up with tradition, Garcia serves up the magazine’s annual “Women in Hollywood” issue for November 2019 offering a whole series of multi-covers for us to hunt down. Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman, Lena Waithe, Melina Matsoukas, Jodie Turner-Smith, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Zendaya, Mindy Kaling (all shot by Zoey Grossman) and Dolly Parton (photographed by Jason Bell) all earned the coveted cover spots.

Forum members immediately began picking their favorite. “Nicole’s cover is one of the best ELLE covers I’ve seen in a long time. None of the others come close to it,” raved dodencebt.

“Nicole blew everyone else out of the water, love it!” agreed FashionMuseDior.

“I actually like all of them! Some of the strongest ELLE covers in a long time. I love the starkness of Scarlett’s and Gwyneth’s,” said honeycombchild.

But not everyone was over the moon. “Beige overload! Nicole’s and maybe Gwyneth’s covers look stunning, but it’s odd to see Gwyneth on a ‘Women in Hollywood’ cover considering the only movies she appears in seem to be The Avengers franchise,” proclaimed Benn98.

“Too many covers, but with this lineup I can understand it! Nicole and Gwyneth are the winners for sure. I like all of them though!” commented apple.

Brand ambassadors are out in full force for September. Kristen Stewart is doing her thing for Chanel on Vanity Fair and now Natalie Portman is promoting all things Christian Dior on British Harper’s Bazaar. We’ve come to admire the magazine a great deal over recent months and following an unexpected model cover last month, British Bazaar‘s most important offering of the year doesn’t fall short. Natalie’s September 2019 cover appearance marks a first for the Hollywood actress (despite numerous covers for the American edition) captured by Pamela Hanson at Villa Carlotta in Los Angeles.

The issue was a hit with the majority of our forum members. “It almost feels like a Richard Avedon 80s Vogue cover. I like it,” approved mikel.

“Red lipstick on a beautiful woman is a classic recipe, but also it feels like a direct reproduction of her Rouge Dior ads. There’s probably a Dior makeup ad on the back page or somewhere inside where she looks exactly the same. That said — still beautiful, still buying,” shared tigerrouge.

“You’ll never hear me complaining over the sight of a gorgeous Natalie Portman on the cover of a fashion magazine, looking radiant and poised on a straightforward and glamorous September cover. I am all for the close-up shot, the warm coloring, the makeup and red Bazaar masthead,” said vogue28.

“Very classic but beautiful. In times when so many magazines seem to be trying too hard, I love something a bit understated,” appreciated KateTheGreatest.

“She looks flawless on both covers,” praised burbuja8910.

“This is just incredibly beautiful. Her face is one in a million. Nothing reinventing the wheel about this cover, but who cares when the wheel looks as glorious as this?” raved happycanadian.

Vogue Australia April 2019 : Natalie Portman by Emma Summerton

Australia ended 2018 on a high note with a vibrant Adut Akech cover and kicked off 2019 with a sultry Emily Ratajkowski offering, yet over recent months, the publication has fallen off our forums’ radar, thanks to uninspired Lily-Rose Depp and ‘Next Generation‘ covers. But with the April 2019 issue starring Natalie Portman, Aussie Vogue has our attention now. Photographed by Emma Summerton and styled by Jillian Davison, the actress wears Christian Dior (natch) in the full-length cover shot, striking an elegant pose atop the Regent Theater in Melbourne.

Did the cover hit the spot for our forum members? “Gorgeous cover!” proclaimed jorgepalomo the moment the cover struck.

“Love the image, hate the typography fonts,” called out amby.

“Why do they always use the same ugly font? Is it their trademark?” asked Hafyiez wafa.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

“What she’s wearing is very nice, more in line with autumn. But the pastel Vogue masthead is entirely out of place. Maybe a rich red would be perfect to break the darkness of this shot,” Benn98 said.

“What the hell is she wearing?” Bertrando3 asked.

Sweetpop wasn’t a fan of the Dior either: “Natalie is gorgeous, as always, but this cover just reinforces how disappointing the recent Dior collection was to me. No part of anything she’s wearing looks luxe or remotely appealing at all. I’m not even sure my anger is rational anymore, but this Dior collection has really got me miffed!”

“This is the sort of cover that makes me think, ‘OK, I can get past it… but how many days until the next issue comes out?'” asked tigerrouge.

In the same frame of mind was slayage, commenting, “My thoughts exactly! The cover is OK but yet again, I think that this is just another boring Vogue Australia cover and pretty forgettable.”

A prime example of how one element can ruin a cover. See what else the issue has to offer and join the debate here.

It wasn’t a particularly great month for glossy covers. With a few exceptions — notably Michelle Obama — the inspiring beauty or fashion looks were low and the amount of holiday cheer was even lower. While there were some beautiful gowns, especially Natalie Portman in Christian Dior, it seems as though most of this month’s shots deserved to be left on the cutting room floor. On the plus side, it was a relatively strong month for models and diversity.

Here’s a look at the best and worst December 2018 magazine covers.

Vanity Fair December 2018 : Natalie Portman by Erik Madigan HeckThis has been a tough year for Vanity Fair and our forums have been on the magazine’s case ever since Radhika Jones was appointed Graydon Carter’s successor. Jones’ first outing as editor-in-chief arrived in the form of a weird or wonderful Jennifer Lawrence cover for March, which was shortly followed up with a paparazzi shot (*shudders*) of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. (Dare we even mention that Michelle Williams September cover?) The publication was no doubt in a rush to put out its final offering of the year in a bid to start afresh in 2019, but not before doing a disservice to Natalie Portman. The actress was photographed for the cover of the December 2018 issue by Erik Madigan Heck and styled by Samira Nasr, giving us a hint of festive glamour in a shimmering Christian Dior dress (Natalie is the face of Dior cosmetics).

The magazine’s attempt at something a little fashion-forward fell flat amongst our forum members. “We would have known this was a blatant advertorial even without tagging the brands, Vanity Fair,” remarked dodencebt the moment the cover struck. “Wait, they really went with this for the cover? Mid-air jump face expression and all? My god is this woman completely clueless as to what makes a decent cover, or what!” slammed Miss Dalloway. “Nothing about the cover really quite works for me. The sunlight on only three-quarters of her face makes her look very washed out and severe,” sweetpop chimed in.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

GivenchyHomme wasn’t a fan of the harsh lighting either. “That lighting isn’t very flattering is it,” he said. Also left unimpressed was forum member Ken Doll Jenner: “With some cropping or a different angle, the cover could work. Radhika must’ve thought that the drama of the hemline should not go to waste, which explains why she picked this cover. Wrong move.” “Natalie is such a beautiful woman, but that cover shot is not flattering. The light is so harsh and severe on her face, and her gaping mouth doesn’t help either. This is another miss for Radhika,” stated mepps. “They turned her into a brunette Carolina Herrera and aged her about 20 years,” said chinsumo. Care to see more? Porter #25 Spring 2018 : Natalie Portman by Cass Bird

was our everything at the newsstand when it first launched. Eventually, our enthusiasm dimmed after a series of safe and mundane covers, though the magazine seems to have gotten its mojo back with recent covers featuring Brie Larson and Imaan Hammam. Now, actress Natalie Portman fronts the publication’s 25th issue for Spring 2018, minus all the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. Cass Bird photographed Natalie hanging out of a car window wearing a Vivienne Westwood corset and some Isabel Marant denim shorts for the retro-inspired cover shoot, styled by Veronique Didry.

The cover generated mixed feedback on our forums. “This is certainly… different for Natalie. I can’t tell whether I like it or not,” dodencebt voiced.

“Maybe it’s just my mind, but here, she looks like a prostitute hanging out on a sunny day, when the going is still good, feeling free… before night falls and the work begins,” mused forum member tigerrouge.

“Yeah, I see the tawdry undertones as well, it’s not to my taste. I think it’s the amateur hair and makeup,” agreed Benn98.

T-rex felt a little uneasy too, commenting, “I can’t figure out why but something doesn’t work here for me. Is it the sexy rockabilly/Carmen Miranda-esque pinup styling on Portman? Maybe she looks a little uncomfortable, or is it the composition? Can’t put my finger on it…”

Yet everyone else was thrilled with the different approach. “Wow! Finally an original spring cover. Never seen Natalie Portman look like this. Stunning!” heralded mercyminx.
