Willy Vanderperre Photographs Many, Many Models for Prada’s Fall 2019 Campaign

Prada used to be known for its impressive advertising campaigns as much as its clothes. But things just haven’t been the same since the departure of Steven Meisel. Now that the Meisel era is over, Willy Vanderperre has become the brand’s new go-to photographer. The fashion house welcomes him back for Fall 2019 to capture its latest campaign featuring a long list of models. Sora Choi, Freja Beha Erichsen, Gigi Hadid, Maud Hoevelaken, Britt Van Den Herik, Rebecca Leigh Longendyke, Jing Wen and Anok Yai (to name just a select few) strike poses in a warehouse decked out with flowers.

The campaign had our forum members scratching their heads. “The others look almost like outtakes. There seems to be no focus, no direction. The clothes are too monotone, so they don’t stand out. There are so many models in each shot and in most of them, nobody really gets a starring role — and even if they do, it’s not powerful enough,” critiqued MyNameIs.

“You could think it’s a Coach or Longchamp ad. So underwhelming, it’s sad,” said a disapproving Morgane07.

“Prada is becoming the new Dolce & Gabbana, every season an uglier campaign than before,” declared zacatecas570.

“I haven’t been a fan of Prada’s campaigns for a number of seasons now, would replace Vanderperre with Steven Meisel in a heartbeat if I had the power, but I can admit that this isn’t the worst Prada campaign I’ve come across,” vogue28 confessed.

Benn98 was in the same frame of mind: “Definitely not bad for Vanderperre, but there’s no light in the tunnel for Prada with this guy shooting the campaigns. Why can’t Miuccia see that? None of this looks cool or aspirational, even in hypebeast terms.”

“It’s an improvement, although he will never have the same finesse as Meisel. I will give the stylists props for cleaning up the terrible and gimmicky runway styling. Wednesday Addams was not a good look,” stated GivenchyHomme.
