Make no mistake that from the moment Margaret Zhang got her foot under the desk as editor-in-chief of Vogue China, she has championed and supported homegrown talent – especially that of Chinese fashion models. Last year, Zhang gave up the Chinese fashion bible’s front covers to everyone from Fei Fei Sun and Shu Pei to Lina Zhang and He Cong. To kick-start 2024, Zhang welcomes Chu Wong as the magazine’s January 2024 cover star. Across a duo of covers, the Chinese beauty who is one of the current faces of Louis Vuitton poses for photographer Huang Jiaqi on location under gloomy grey skies and a rugged landscape which makes for a visually-arresting backdrop. Dressed by stylist Vivienne Sun, Wong wears pieces from Prada’s Spring 2024 collection in the two cover photographs.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Every issue of Vogue China under the new editor feels the same. It’s all so boring,” blueorchid critiqued.

Also majorly underwhelmed was vogue28: “The second cover with the maroon-colored Prada is abysmal, as if the month of January isn’t dismal enough already! The red of the Prada skirt on the first cover does help brighten the gloomy (albeit stunning) backdrop in the first cover somewhat, which I am able to appreciate. What a pair of weak covers from Vogue China!”

Forum member crmsm ultimately disagreed, commenting: “Beautiful covers!”

“Very easy on the eyes, I’m thoroughly enjoying everything,” oaklee91 approved.

As creative director of Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquière has called upon a whole rooster of talent to photograph his advertising campaigns for the storied French fashion house. The French-Belgian designer’s selections have included everyone from Bruce Weber to Ethan James Green and Steven Meisel to David Sims. Jamie Hawkesworth is the latest photographer endorsed by Ghesquière, with the unveiling of Louis Vuitton’s Cruise 2024 advertising campaign. Echoing the setting of the show, the campaign’s backdrop is that of Lake Maggiore in Italy, with Ghesquière’s cast (including Chu Wong, Mica Argañaraz, Valentina Castro, Ida Heiner and Emma Laird) captured by Hawkesoworth during golden hour, on the island of Isola Bella.

Members of our forums were left in awe. “Maybe my favorite Vuitton campaign since Fall 2021. Jamie Hawkesoworth is perfect for Nicolas’s work,” admired Lola701.

“I love this so much, the warmth, everything. It’s actually made me quite emotional, instantly took me back to holidays with my mother at Lake Como,” shared forum member upNorth.

“Some wonderful images here,” fruitbasedsnack chimed in.

Sharing the same level of enthusiasm toward the campaign was vogue28, voicing: “Admittedly I am no fan of Jamie Hawkesworth but this is one gorgeous campaign, and far outshines Louis Vuitton’s mainline campaign for Fall 2023. The colors are gorgeous, as is the lighting and the Lake Como setting is utterly magical.”

“Wonderful campaign. Very beautiful and warm images!” enthused thiago.

During Nicolas Ghesquière’s career at Louis Vuitton, we’ve witnessed everyone from Bruce Weber to Steven Meisel to Collier Schorr to Patrick Demarchelier serve as the brand’s campaign photographer. Recently, the label seems to have settled on David Sims. Following last season‘s triumphant offering captured on the majestic pebbled beaches of Normandy, we’re back in the comfort of the studio for Spring 2022. Actresses HoYeon Jung, Stacy Martin and Samara Weaving appear alongside journalist Agathe Rousselle, singer Lous and the Yakuza plus models Mona Tougaard, Kristine Lindseth, Rianne Van Rompaey, Fleur Breijer, Ida Heiner and Chu Wong all posing against colorful backdrops.

In the eyes of our forum members, however, this season feels like a huge setback. “Even looking past those clip art lens flares, this is awful,” WinstonH20 expressed the moment the campaign dropped.

“I hate the tacky lens flare, like who thought that was a good choice? Quite a low point for Sims,” critiqued aracic.

“Not sure I’ve ever seen worse from Louis Vuitton. Putrid,” complained dontbeadrag.

“This is the dumbest-looking fashion campaign I have ever seen. I’m shocked that this is David Sims. The fake lights, the bright background and the terrible fake dancing,” called out GivenchyHomme.

DK92 was also far from impressed: “I don’t have words to describe this tragedy… In fact, to be quite honest, I can’t even say what’s worse about this campaign because it’s simply a combination of a zillion terrible things!”

“Maybe it should have been shot by Jean-Paul Goude to really push it forward,” suggested Lola701.

“They all probably think that they have created something ‘genius’…” PowerDroid pointed out.

In case you couldn’t tell by all the Diversity Reports, inclusion is pretty important to us. We love seeing a variety of races, sizes, gender identities and ages on the runways, in addition to killer clothes. So we are super thrilled to reveal that the top model of this season is a woman of color. South Sudan’s own Shanelle Nyasiase walked for an impressive 43 designers, taking home the top prize this time around.

Actually, half of the top 12 were women of color. And while there were a few holdouts from the New York list, a good portion of the ranking models on this countdown didn’t register in the Big Apple.

See how many runways your favorite catwalker conquered above.

As the September issues continue to be revealed, our forum members have yet to be wowed by any of the major fashion glossies. Vogue China has just released a duo of covers for the year’s most anticipated edition featuring four high-profile models. The first cover features Bella Hadid and Chu Wong wearing Christian Dior, photographed on the streets of Paris by Patrick Demarchelier. Anna Ewers and Fei Fei Sun couple up on the second cover wearing head-to-toe Prada, captured by Collier Schorr. Was it enough to meet our forum’s high expectations?
IMAGE: WEIBO.COM/VOGUECHINA A handful of our members were left pleasantly surprised. “Love these! Especially the second one. Finally some fall intrigue for September,” applauded A.D.C. “These are good, wow!” exclaimed TeeVanity. “Gorgeous covers, love both of them. All the girls look stunning,” raved Miss Dalloway. Also pleased by the covers twas TheoG: “These are actually quite decent, in my opinion. I mean in comparison to the covers this year but they do lack that certain energy for September.” But not everyone was a fan. “It could be nice covers but with different models. As I love Anna I must say she doesn’t look good here. Bella is awful as always. Only Fei Fei Sun is shining,” stated narcyza. Tjasmine wrote, “The Fei Fei and Anna cover (below) is quite boring. Pretty disappointed with how they both look. Really like the first cover though. Bella and especially Chu look great.” “Ugh, when will magazines learn that they must only use models that correspond with the majority readers’ race of the magazine? So annoying! I like both covers. They’re nothing special but they’re fine,” noted dodencebt. “Very dead covers. Sorry. It tried to be elegant but ended up very sleep-inducing. Nope,” MON commented.
