Make no mistake that from the moment Margaret Zhang got her foot under the desk as editor-in-chief of Vogue China, she has championed and supported homegrown talent – especially that of Chinese fashion models. Last year, Zhang gave up the Chinese fashion bible’s front covers to everyone from Fei Fei Sun and Shu Pei to Lina Zhang and He Cong. To kick-start 2024, Zhang welcomes Chu Wong as the magazine’s January 2024 cover star. Across a duo of covers, the Chinese beauty who is one of the current faces of Louis Vuitton poses for photographer Huang Jiaqi on location under gloomy grey skies and a rugged landscape which makes for a visually-arresting backdrop. Dressed by stylist Vivienne Sun, Wong wears pieces from Prada’s Spring 2024 collection in the two cover photographs.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Every issue of Vogue China under the new editor feels the same. It’s all so boring,” blueorchid critiqued.

Also majorly underwhelmed was vogue28: “The second cover with the maroon-colored Prada is abysmal, as if the month of January isn’t dismal enough already! The red of the Prada skirt on the first cover does help brighten the gloomy (albeit stunning) backdrop in the first cover somewhat, which I am able to appreciate. What a pair of weak covers from Vogue China!”

Forum member crmsm ultimately disagreed, commenting: “Beautiful covers!”

“Very easy on the eyes, I’m thoroughly enjoying everything,” oaklee91 approved.

The November 2023 cover of Vogue China starring Shalom Harlow proved to be somewhat of a major setback for the magazine. The Chinese fashion bible could perhaps be returning to full form with the unveiling of its December 2023 installment, however. To close out the year, editor Margaret Zhang is shining a spotlight on the power of craftsmanship and the art of fashion. To add to the sense of celebration, Zhang welcomes the next generation for Chinese models onto a series of commemorative covers, with Sherry Shi, Mengyao Wang, Huijia Chen and Hejia Li becoming cover girls in the process. Photographed by Felix Cooper and styled by Alvin Yu, the girls pose on the main group cover (below) while venture out on their lonesome for their respective solo covers (after the jump).

Ultimately, Chinese Vogue‘s latest divided members of our forums in their opinions. “Worst Vogue China cover this year,” declared Hafyiez wafa at once.

In complete agreement was crmsn, echoing: “This is their worst cover this year for sure!”

“How dreadful,” shrieked an unimpressed lanvinray.

“Too much empty space for my liking! The cropping of the photograph and the composition of the cover as a whole leaves a lot to be desired. What a crying shame to end the year with such a sad, sterile and lifeless cover,” chimed in vogue28.

In the eyes of our forum members, things started to slightly improve once the solo covers dropped. “So much better than the first cover,” voiced callmejaeden.

“The individual covers are a lot better,” Urban Stylin noted.

Vogue China July 2022 : Kendall Jenner by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin

Since scoring her very first cover of Vogue back in 2015, we’ve had a love/hate relationship with Kendall Jenner. Whether she’s overshadowed by Adut Akech on ELLE or serving high-fashion glamour on Vogue Russia, our forum members never mince words regarding the American reality TV star turned fashion darling. Now Vogue China taps the current face of Michael Kors Collection for July 2022 popping up on the Chinese fashion bible 17 months after her last appearance. Photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Kendall poses alongside a flashy red car working an 80s-inspired hairdo plus a Balenciaga bodysuit and Chanel accessories selected by George Cortina.

Kendall’s latest addition to her portfolio is a total triumph. “I like it. Kendall looks confident and she sells that outfit as well,” said crmsnsnwflks.

“I have to agree, Kendall actually works it here. She excels at that vacant Helmut Newton-esque fembot look. Also wouldn’t mind if she cut her hair like this, too, would definitely liven up her look a bit…” Cocteau Stone chimed in.

“Absolutely gorgeous, I love this,” raved KINGofVERSAILLES.

“Despite not being the biggest supporter of Kendall Jenner, I am very much a fan of the femme fatale vibes (a la Brigitte Nielsen) and strong sense of 80s glamour here. Also loving the dramatic beauty styling and the fact George Cortina is involved,” admitted vogue28.

“Truly gorgeous! And quite a breath of fresh air for Vogue China since they usually seem to go in a different direction than this. Kendall is channeling a special kind of old glamour here and I’m very excited to see it! It looks great on her,” added aracic.

Margaret Zhang continues to make an impression at Vogue China. From kick-starting her tenure back in 2021 with a “hauntingly beautiful” Jinghan Fan cover to championing inclusivity with a body-positive cover for March 2022, the editor obviously means business. For June 2022, the magazine welcomes Marion Cotillard as the Chinese fashion bible’s latest cover star. In the dark and moody (albeit  glamorous) cover photograph, the French actress and Chanel brand ambassador wears a Chanel Spring 2022 Haute Couture creation selected by the publication’s fashion director Audrey Hu for the image shot by Paolo Roversi.

The end result, however, received mixed reactions. “Um…NO!” declared DK92 the moment the cover dropped.

“She looks like an off-duty witch!” YohjiAddict pointed out.

“Why did they make her look like Morticia Addams?” wondered MyNameIs.

“Everything looks unflattering,” Bertrando3 chimed in.

“Whoever did the Photoshop should get the boot. It’s TERRIBLE. Marion Cotillard always photographs incredibly and to have this as a result is insulting,” proclaimed a dissatisfied WAVES.

“They really did her dirty here,” echoed toffie.

Although not everyone agreed. “Perhaps the only Vogue China cover I’ve admired since Zhang’s debut, it’s gorgeous! I will always approve of some dark glamour and Marion wears Chanel so wonderfully. She’s so photogenic!” exclaimed vogue28.

“I quite like this cover, actually. Feels very mature and refined!” admitted aracic.

Vogue China March 2022 : He Cong, Ma Yanli, Niu Yu & Xu Ruoxin by Nick Yang

Margaret Zhang has been at the helm of Vogue China for exactly seven months injecting new life into the Chinese fashion bible. Zhang’s debut cover with Jinghan Fan blew us away and recent covers with Liu Wen, Karen Elson and others have been nothing short of spectacular. As editions of Vogue around the world share the same theme for March 2022, Vogue China’s latest helps redefine beauty standards. He Cong, Ma Yanli, Niu Yu and Xu Ruoxin front the special issue captured by photographer Nick Yang. For the retro-inspired shoot, the girls transport us back to the 60s each sporting a different look from Christian Dior’s Spring 2022 collection.

The end result thrilled members of our forums. “Oh I love this,” confessed MON the moment the cover dropped.

“That is GORGEOUS!” praised crmsnsnwflks.

“This looks gorgeous and how it should be done every single time. Sincere and authentic, like a truly modernized nod to the 60s…” dontbeadrag pointed out.

“It’s like the new classic. Just sublime! And I’m truly excited to see this celebration of diversity. Vogue China is getting stronger and stronger,” noted an equally impressed phungnam96.

“Thank god for Vogue China,” proclaimed Kimy Jo.

Horizontina is also clearly a fan: “No other edition of Vogue can even dream of treating color, managing light, implementing a vision like Vogue China does consistently. Everyone else’s one-offs are Margaret Zhang’s routine.”

“This is how you do diversity!” raved gunsnroses.

“This is such a tasteful way to show inclusivity on a magazine… I love it,” echoed Nomar.

It’s no secret that due to the ongoing global health crisis, magazines have been hit hard. Despite the best efforts of editors to keep our favorite glossies afloat, there have been some changes. Which translated to historic moments down at newsstands when it came to 2021 magazine covers.

Condé Nast streamlined operations. Editions of Vogue now share content as a cost-cutting exercise resulting in some being left unable to produce localized content. Nevertheless, we encountered back-to-back British Vogue covers photographed by forum favorite Steven Meisel. Anna Wintour also appears to be shaking things up over at American Vogue with 14 of the magazine’s 20 cover stars never gracing the fashion bible before. Not to mention Emmanuelle Alt departing Vogue Paris on a high note with the unveiling of the title’s landmark 100th anniversary issue.

Meanwhile Samira Nasr continues to find her footing at American Harper’s Bazaar. Laura Brown’s InStyle remains one of the most buzzworthy publications. Michelle Lee helped Allure celebrate 30 years in print. At i-D, Alastair McKimm’s mission to reinstate the magazine as one of the most cutting-edge publications appears to be working.

From overuse of Photoshop on Madonna’s cover of V Magazine to Iman gracing British Harper’s Bazaar to diversity reigning supreme at British Vogue, here are the best and worst magazine covers of 2021.

The cover is absolutely sublime and the background is captivating with those mountains and the coloring from the sunrise,” raved vogue28. While BlueRuin simply described the cover as “stunning.” But not everyone shared the same sentiment. “The background looks almost painted like one of those Chinese watercolor paintings. Now that Margaret Zhang has officially replaced Angelica Cheung, we’re expecting great things from Vogue China. Although recent covers failed to stimulate, including Kendall Jenner‘s February 2021 offering. Now Indira Scott makes her Vogue China cover debut for July 2021. Indira wears an impeccably cut Versace Spring 2021 blazer chosen by Celia Azoulay for the image captured by Steven Pan.

But our forum members clearly aren’t fans. “Happy for Indira. However not crazy over this image,” voiced Summer Day.

“This image does nothing for me. Blank stare and questionable makeup,” Bertrando3 points out.

“Kinda bland despite that orange makeup. Very happy for Indira though…” declares oaklee91.

FashionMuseDior shares the same sentiment: “Happy to see Indira, but the photography is so pedestrian.”

“She looks really nice here, but it is indeed quite bland,” echoed aracic.

Benn98 isn’t impressed, either. “This is not a magazine cover, sorry! Looks like something plucked off a lifestyle influencer’s Instagram feed. Even the makeup, which actually looks interesting, is almost washed out in this shot.”

“This is just about as uneventful as it gets and such a cover will almost definitely go forgotten within the next few months. I do like the Versace blazer teamed with the gold necklace, but that orange eye makeup and Indira’s total lack of energy and presence fail to do this cover justice,” proclaims vogue28.

Vogue China February 2021 : Kendall Jenner by Autumn de Wilde

All eyes have been on Vogue China recently following Angelica Cheung’s sudden departure from the publication. The majority of the magazine’s front covers in 2020 failed to impress our forum members, even with cover stars like Billie Eilish, Natalia Vodianova and Kaia Gerber. Cheung rounded out her tenure last month with a stunning Xiao Wen Ju offering. Now Kendall Jenner ushers in a new era for the Chinese fashion bible with the February 2021 issue. Captured by Autumn de Wilde, the popular model fittingly wears a floral Gucci dress (selected by stylist Max Ortega) while surrounded by flowers and greenery.

The cover was a flop on our forums. “Angelica come back! Please!” pleaded Nomar the moment the cover dropped.

“What an insipid cover…” Miss Dalloway chimed in.

“The cover is so bad. Kendall, blink twice if you need help. How can Kendall have been modeling for six years and still show no improvement? She’s the poster child of everything I hate about nepotism models,” declared an uninterested THD96.

Ghesquiere32 was also less than thrilled: “This and her Vogue Japan cover are both horrible covers. Stop sticking this girl on covers, it just doesn’t work. But Kendall has taught everybody one important lesson: just because you are tall, thin and pretty does not mean you are meant to model.”

“I mean it’s not terrible but somehow lifeless and definitely pedestrian,” admitted WAVES.

“A surprisingly unflattering photo of Kendall who, despite lacking in modeling skills, normally looks really beautiful in photos. Her hair is a mess, too. I like the setting and the vibe, though. It’s not terrible, it’s just kinda meh,” added KINGofVERSAILLES.

“I don’t hate the cover, it’s very understated and romantic without being too corny,” defended Benn98.

Vogue China December 2020 : Kaia Gerber by Craig McDean

Kaia Gerber’s body of work just keeps growing. This year alone we’ve seen the all-American beauty grace the covers of i-D, V Magazine, American Vogue, Vogue Japan along with Vogue Italia (twice). Now Kaia helps Vogue China close the book on 2020 (just as Angelica Cheung announces her departure from the magazine). In a dramatic departure from her sultry Japanese Vogue appearance, the in-demand model fronts Chinese Vogue‘s December issue sporting Moncler while posing for photographer Craig McDean.

But the cover fell flat on our forums. “This is a perfect year-end cover as it perfectly embodies 2020 — rough,” critiqued MON.

“I don’t think it makes a strong statement to end the year and the styling is off-putting, trying too hard to be cool and edgy…which is not at all Vogue China’s forte,” YohjiAddict chimed in.

“The hair and harsh makeup ruined it,” declared an obviously disappointed Urban Stylin.

“Oh no, Craig, looks like he just gave up and is trying to make 2009 happen again,” voiced BlueRuin.

“Lazy, lazy, lazy…looks like a remix of McDean’s American Vogue editorials but boring and not in a good way,” disapproved Xone.

Phuel isn’t impressed, either. “Any new model doing her first test shot could have done better. Any new photographer doing test shots for an agency to build up their book could have shot better.”

Bertrando3 was also clearly underwhelmed: “Can these Instagirls TRY at the very least to actually model when they are doing shoots? Girls like Kaia manage to always look super bored and lifeless…”
