Virginie Viard remains dependent upon Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin to capture her vision of today’s ultimate Chanel woman, as the fabled French fashion house’s creative director welcomes back the Dutch photographic duo to lens the Cruise 2024 campaign (fresh from shooting Fall 2023). Viard muses Loli Bahia and Anna Ewers feature as the faces of the collection, who both evoke the spirit of the collection by transporting us to Venice Beach in Los Angeles, captured by I&V at sunset and into nightfall. The Californian setting ultimately renders as the ideal backdrop for the campaign. After all, the house of Chanel ventured almost 6,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean to LA for the unveiling of the Cruise 2024 showcase back in May.
The end result, however, caused a divide amongst members of theFashionSpot forums. “Too much Photoshop, it looks cheap. The lightning is so bad,” shrieked Bombshell1.
“The teasers for the collection starring Alma Jodorowsky were far superior than this! I love I&V’s work, approve of the two models here, love the colors but the end result leaves a whole lot to be desired. It’s all just a bit… flat and one-dimensional,” an underwhelmed vogue28 critiqued.
Also unimpressed was RMDV, adding: “Anna looks like one of the women from the cast of Selling OC wearing a ridiculous tween/barbie outfit!”
“It does have a 90s Chanel playful feel but the hair and personality is lacking. Claudia Schiffer or Stephanie Seymour would have blown it out of the water,” Urban Stylin pointed out.
“I mean, it would have been a perfect opportunity to have house ambassador Margot Robbie as the OG for the campaign. Beautiful colors and composition but terrible campaign,” Lola701 voiced.
“I think it’s appropriate for the Los Angeles inspiration of the collection. Don’t love it, but I’m always happy to see Anna,” chimed in KoV.
